Jain Community Protests Following Tragic Accident in Rewa

Rewa, May 24: The Jain community across India is mourning and expressing outrage following a tragic road accident in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. The incident resulted in the deaths of two Jain nuns, while a third nun sustained serious injuries.

In response to this incident, the community has announced a series of peaceful protests on May 25, demanding justice for the Jain nuns and improved safety measures.

The heartbreaking accident occurred on the morning of May 20 near the Collectorate in the Civil Lines area of Rewa. A speeding car struck three Jain nuns who were participating in a religious procession.

Shrutamati Mata, a disciple of Acharya Shri Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj and a native of Sagar district, died at the scene. The other two nuns, from Tamil Nadu and Jabalpur, were critically injured and rushed to the hospital. One was placed on ventilator support, while the other succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

The driver, Rashid Ali Shah, fled the scene but was apprehended by police approximately 270 kilometers away near Jabalpur.

Video footage circulating on various media platforms clearly shows the car veering suddenly from the road and heading directly towards the nuns, who were walking along the roadside.

The driver has been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for speeding, reckless driving, and hit-and-run. Police confirmed that the vehicle was returning from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh to Nagpur in Maharashtra. This incident has deeply shocked the Jain community.

Many community members have questioned whether the accident was truly accidental. Some have called for an in-depth investigation to rule out any potential conspiracy. In response, Jain organizations have called for peaceful protests and marches on May 25 in Bhopal, Indore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and other major cities.

Community leaders have urged for calm while emphasizing the need for accountability and enhanced safety for Jain monks and nuns, who travel barefoot as part of their religious practices.

Senior Jain saints, including Muni Shri Praman Sagar Ji, have issued messages urging the community to maintain patience, faith, and restraint during this difficult time.

Rajya Sabha member Naveen Jain has also expressed condolences and solidarity with the grieving community.

The Madhya Pradesh government has assured strict action against the accused. This tragic incident has once again highlighted the insecurity faced by Jain monks on public roads and the growing concerns regarding road safety in the state.

As preparations for the protests intensify, the entire Jain community has united in their demand for justice for the departed souls and the safety of their religious leaders. A significant turnout is expected at these peaceful demonstrations, reflecting the community’s collective outrage and determination.
