Jacob Bethel Sets Record for Fastest Century in T20 World Cup for England

Mumbai, March 5: In a thrilling second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026, England faced a narrow defeat against India, losing by seven runs. Chasing a daunting target of 254 runs at Wankhede Stadium, England managed to score only 246 runs, losing seven wickets in the process. Jacob Bethel showcased his exceptional batting skills, scoring a blistering 105 runs off just 48 balls. This remarkable performance earned him the record for the fastest century by an English player in T20 World Cup history.

Bethel reached his century in just 45 balls, becoming only the second English player to score a century in the T20 World Cup. Earlier in this tournament, English captain Harry Brook had scored a century off 50 balls. Additionally, Bethel set a record for the second-fastest century in T20 World Cup history, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous record of 47 balls, achieved during the 2016 World Cup against England.

The fastest century in T20 World Cup history is held by Finn Allen, who scored a century in just 33 balls against South Africa in this tournament’s semifinal. Bethel also holds the record for the fastest fifty by an English player in the T20 World Cup, reaching his half-century in just 19 balls. Despite his outstanding performance, Bethel received little support from his fellow batsmen. Will Jacks contributed 35 runs, while Jos Buttler added 25 runs to the total.

Earlier, India set a formidable total of 253 runs, losing seven wickets in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson played a spectacular innings, scoring 89 runs off 42 balls. Shivam Dube also made a significant contribution with a quick 43 runs off 25 balls. Hardik Pandya scored 27 runs off 12 balls, and Tilak Varma added 21 runs. The final match of the T20 World Cup 2026 will see Team India face New Zealand on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.
