New Delhi, July 29: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla extended his congratulations to Indian athletes who won medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. He praised the performances of silver medalists Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur before the question hour on Tuesday.
Birla stated, “Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh have brought pride to the nation by winning silver medals at the 23rd Commonwealth Games. I extend heartfelt congratulations and best wishes from the House to all athletes, their coaches, and Team India for enhancing the country’s honor.”
Following the Speaker’s remarks, opposition members created a ruckus, leading to the suspension of the House proceedings.
Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur excelled in the 69-kilogram category, lifting a total of 227 kilograms to secure her silver medal. She lifted 101 kilograms in the snatch round and achieved her best performance by lifting 126 kilograms in the clean and jerk round. After winning the silver medal, Harjinder expressed her happiness in an interview, stating that she aimed to change the color of her medal this time.
Meanwhile, Gulveer Singh earned a silver medal in the 10,000-meter race, finishing with a time of 27:49.78 seconds. He became the first athlete from India to win a medal in this competition.
India’s performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026 has been remarkable so far, with the country winning a total of 12 medals, including 2 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals. The first gold medal for India was secured by Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting, where she lifted a total of 190 kilograms in the 48-kilogram category. Additionally, para-athlete Sharmila Dhankhar won a gold medal in the F57 shot put event.
