New Delhi, July 29: The West Indies showcased an outstanding performance, defeating Pakistan by 90 runs in the first Test match. Chasing a target of 211 runs, Pakistan’s entire team collapsed for just 120 runs in their second innings. The West Indies bowlers managed to dismiss Pakistan in both innings.
This marks the first time in Test cricket history that all 20 wickets in a match against Pakistan were taken by West Indies fast bowlers. Justin Greaves claimed 5 wickets in the first innings, while Jayden Seales matched that feat in the second innings.
Pakistan was all out for their fifth-lowest score in Tests against the West Indies. This match is only the sixth instance in Test history where all 40 wickets were taken by fast bowlers. The West Indies secured their second victory in their last 11 Test matches, while Pakistan faced their eighth consecutive defeat on foreign soil since 2023.
Pakistan’s second innings began poorly. Opener Azaan Awais was dismissed for just 3 runs, and Imam-ul-Haq fell for the same score, becoming a victim of Kemar Roach. Salman Agha also failed to score, returning to the pavilion without opening his account. Wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan managed only 11 runs off 28 balls, and Aamir Jamal could not score in his 12-ball stint.
The middle and lower order of the visiting team also struggled. Ali Usman was out for 2 runs, while Shan Masood scored just 3. Khurram Shehzad managed 4 runs, and Mohammad Ali returned without scoring. Captain Babar Azam held firm at one end, scoring an unbeaten 58 runs off 107 balls, including 9 boundaries, but lacked support from his teammates.
Jayden Seales delivered a devastating bowling performance, taking 5 wickets for just 20 runs in 14.2 overs. Veteran bowlers Kemar Roach and Justin Greaves each took 2 wickets. Earlier, Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas excelled with the ball, taking 5 wickets in the second innings and helping to restrict the West Indies to 181 runs.
In the first innings, the West Indies scored 311 runs, thanks to remarkable contributions from Shai Hope (92) and Kevan Hodge (84). In response, Pakistan managed 282 runs, with Shan Masood scoring a century (109 runs).
