Jackie Shroff Pays Tribute to Legendary Filmmaker Satyajit Ray on His Birth Anniversary

Mumbai, May 2: In the annals of Indian cinema, certain names transcend time, achieving immortality. One such name is the legendary director Satyajit Ray. On Saturday, in honor of Ray’s birth anniversary, actor Jackie Shroff took to social media to pay tribute to him.

Jackie shared a black-and-white photograph of Satyajit Ray on his Instagram Stories, capturing the director in a contemplative moment near the camera.

The synergy of music, screenplay, and direction in Satyajit Ray’s films remains a textbook for film students even today. He is regarded as the only Indian filmmaker to have received an honorary Oscar (Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement).

Ray’s cinematic journey began with his first film, “Pather Panchali” (1955), based on the novel by Bengali author Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. Ray was so inspired by the novel that he decided to adapt it into his debut film. However, the story behind the novel is equally fascinating.

It is said that the narrative did not emerge effortlessly. Before it was penned down, it required the sacrifice of 500 pages. Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay had initially written a different story, but during a stroll, he spotted an eight-year-old girl with tousled hair and a charming smile. He felt she could be the heroine of his tale. He rushed home and tore up all the pages of his old script, centering the story around that girl, who later became known as Durga, one of the most memorable and immortal characters in Indian cinema. Once the story was ready, Satyajit Ray brought it to the screen, earning global acclaim.

This film bestowed Indian cinema with a level of international respect that was once only a dream. Ray’s films, filled with realism and human emotions, showcased the profound impact Indian stories can have on the world.
