Washington, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has raised concerns about a suspected bomb plot near the RAF Fairford airbase in the UK, claiming there is “clearly some foreign power’s hand” involved. However, he did not specify which foreign entity he was referring to and did not provide any supporting evidence for his assertion.
In an interview with Fox News, Rubio described the situation as extremely serious and indicated that more information would emerge in the coming days. He commended British authorities for their swift action in the matter.
The UK Counter Terrorism Police reported that five British citizens were arrested early Sunday near RAF Fairford. Authorities had received alerts about three suspicious white vans heading toward the airbase. The suspects, aged between 23 and 25 and believed to be from the London area, were detained on suspicion of preparing for terrorist activities and violating explosives laws.
Despite the gravity of the situation, all five were released on police bail under strict conditions on Monday. The UK Counter Terrorism Police clarified that this does not signify the end of the investigation. Authorities are considering various angles, including the possibility that the suspects may have been acting directly or indirectly on behalf of a foreign state.
Iran has emerged as a potential angle in the investigation, given RAF Fairford’s use for U.S. military operations and Iran’s previous threats against such American installations. However, British investigative agencies have not publicly attributed responsibility to Iran, which has denied any involvement in the plot.
U.S. President Donald Trump also hinted at a possible connection to Iran but did not confirm it. He expressed surprise over the suspects being granted bail.
