Irans Foreign Minister Condemns US for Sinking Iranian Warship

Mumbai, March 5: Iran’s Foreign Minister, Saeed Abbas Araghchi, has expressed deep regret over the attack and sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, condemning the United States in strong terms. He described the incident as “cruelty at sea” and warned that Washington would face significant regret for its actions.

Araghchi stated that the warship had recently visited the Indian Navy and was carrying approximately 130 sailors at the time of the attack. He accused the US of launching an unprovoked assault in international waters, far from Iranian territory.

In a post on X, he remarked, “The US committed an act of brutality 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. The frigate Dena, a guest of the Indian Navy with about 130 sailors onboard, was attacked without warning in international waters. Remember my words: the US will deeply regret the precedent it has set.”

This statement came after a US submarine launched a torpedo at the IRIS Dena near the southern coast of Sri Lanka, marking the first time since World War II that the US has used a torpedo from a submarine to sink a ship.

The small Iranian warship was returning from participating in the 2026 International Fleet Review held in Visakhapatnam, India, last month. The frigate-class vessel IRIS Dena took part in the multinational naval exercise from February 18 to 25, which included approximately 74 countries. Notably, the US did not participate in this exercise, having initially planned to send the guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney but withdrew shortly before it began.

Reports indicate that the IRIS Dena was attacked in international waters on March 4 while returning from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

Following the attack, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that an Iranian warship was sunk by a US torpedo in the Indian Ocean.

Rescue efforts commenced in the area, with the Sri Lankan Navy claiming to have saved around 30 sailors so far. The remaining survivors were transported to Karapitiya Hospital in the southern port city of Galle for treatment.
