
Tehran, March 19: A large crowd gathered in Tehran on Wednesday to pay their respects at the funeral of the crew members of the frigate sunk by the United States, along with a top security official and a high-ranking military commander killed in Israeli attacks.
On March 4, the USS Charlotte, a Los Angeles-class submarine, torpedoed Iran’s Dena frigate in the Indian Ocean, resulting in the deaths of 104 crew members and injuries to 32 others.
Iran confirmed that Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), and Gholam-Reza Soleimani, the Chief Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ voluntary Basij force, were killed in the Israeli strikes.
Larijani’s son, Morteza, the SNSC’s Deputy Secretary for Security Affairs Alireza Bayat, and several of their bodyguards also lost their lives in the attack.
On Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed on the social media platform ‘X’ that Iranian Intelligence Minister Ismail Khati was also among the deceased.
The ceremony was attended by family members of the victims, Iranian government officials, military commanders, and a large number of people from various sectors. It began at the historic ‘Enghelab Square’ and marched to the location in southern Tehran where the fallen heroes are honored and buried.
Mourners waved Iranian flags and held photographs of their ‘martyrs,’ including the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. They pledged loyalty and support to the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and chanted slogans against the United States and Israel.
They also vowed to take revenge for the ‘crimes’ committed by the U.S. and Israel, leading to the deaths of Iranians.
On February 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities, resulting in the deaths of the country’s Supreme Leader, high-ranking military officials, and civilians. In response, Iran targeted Israeli and U.S. assets and positions in the Middle East with missile and drone strikes.
