New Delhi, March 9: Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, India has granted permission for the Iranian warship IRIS Lavan to dock at Kochi Port. In response, Iran has expressed its gratitude, labeling India’s action as “humanitarian.” This information was shared by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during a speech in the Rajya Sabha.
Jaishankar highlighted the challenges of maintaining high-level communication with Iran due to the current situation in West Asia. However, he confirmed that diplomatic discussions continue through existing channels.
He stated, “While efforts have been made, contacting Iran at the leadership level is clearly difficult at this time. Nevertheless, I spoke with Foreign Minister Araqchi on February 20 and March 5, 2026. We will continue these high-level discussions in the coming days.”
During his address, he also mentioned the Iranian Navy ship that has recently docked in Kochi. The minister elaborated on the circumstances under which India allowed the vessel to enter its port.
This development occurred following the sinking of another Iranian warship, IRIS Dena, near Sri Lanka. Around the same time, another Iranian naval ship had reached out to India for assistance due to technical difficulties while operating in the area.
EAM Jaishankar noted, “On February 20, 2026, the Iranian side requested permission for three vessels to dock at our port. This was granted on March 1, 2026. The IRIS Lavan actually docked in Kochi on March 4, 2026. The crew is currently at an Indian Navy facility. We believe this was the right thing to do. The Iranian Foreign Minister has thanked our country for this humanitarian act.”
The minister also addressed concerns regarding India’s energy security amid ongoing instability in West Asia, emphasizing that the government prioritizes the interests of Indian consumers.
He remarked, “First and foremost, India stands for peace and calls for a return to dialogue and diplomacy. We advocate for de-escalation, restraint, and ensuring the safety of ordinary people. Secondly, the welfare and security of the Indian community in the region is our priority. We will continue to work with the governments in this direction.”
In conclusion, EAM Jaishankar stated, “Ultimately, our national interests, including energy security and trade, will always remain paramount.”
