Iran Releases Names of Nearly 3,000 Killed in Recent Protests

Iran Publishes List of Nearly 3,000 People Killed During Recent Unrest

New Delhi, February 2 – The office of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has released a list naming 2,986 individuals who lost their lives amid the recent unrest in the country.

According to a statement published on the President’s official website on Sunday, the list was compiled based on data received from Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization under the President’s instructions. The list includes both civilians and security personnel.

The President’s office stated that the total death toll has now reached 3,117, with 131 victims yet to be identified. The Xinhua news agency reported that an additional list will be released once these identities are confirmed.

The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to full transparency and accountability. It reiterated that all those who died were considered Iran’s own children and assured that no grieving family would be ignored.

The protests, which started in late December and continued into January, initially erupted over the sharp decline of the national currency, the rial. While initially peaceful, the demonstrations later turned violent, resulting in casualties and damage to mosques, government buildings, and banks. Iran has blamed the United States and Israel for instigating the unrest.

Meanwhile, Iran’s military chief, Amir Hatami, warned last week that any mistake by the US would endanger not only its own security but also that of Israel and the entire West Asia region.

Speaking at a ceremony in Tehran, Hatami said, “Today, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran are fully prepared for defense and military readiness, closely monitoring enemy activities in the region. Our finger is on the trigger. Any mistake by the enemy will undoubtedly threaten its own security, Israel’s security, and the region.” He also welcomed neighboring countries’ declarations that they would not allow their airspace or territories to be used against Iran, stating these countries understand that any insecurity against Iran would destabilize the entire region.

Hatami added that if the opposing party genuinely seeks a solution, it must treat the Iranian people with respect.

This statement comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington. Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced that a large naval fleet led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was heading towards Iran, warning that Iran had limited time left to reach an agreement with the US.

Trump also stated that if Iran refuses to comply with the nuclear deal, it would be seen whether Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s warning holds true. Khamenei had cautioned that a US attack on Iran could ignite war across the region.
