Tehran, March 29: The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has announced that its air defense system targeted a US F-16 Fighting Falcon and an MQ-9 Reaper drone in the southern airspace of the country.
In a statement released through its official news outlet, Sepah News, the IRGC claimed that the American fighter jet and drone were hit during joint missile and drone operations conducted by its naval and aerospace divisions. These operations were reportedly aimed at heavy industries linked to the United States and Israel, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Additionally, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) acknowledged that its F-16 Fighting Falcon was indeed targeted. CENTCOM shared this information in a post on the social media platform X. “A US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon safely landed at a base in the Middle East following a combat flight in support of Operation Epic Fury,” it stated.
Moreover, the IRGC claimed on Saturday that it had destroyed a Ukrainian anti-drone equipment warehouse located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which was allegedly being used to assist US forces.
Spokesperson Ibrahim Zolghadri of Iran’s main military command, Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters, stated that the warehouse, which housed Ukrainian anti-drone systems and contained 21 Ukrainian nationals, was targeted and destroyed in a joint operation by the IRGC’s air force and navy.
In response, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hryhoriy Tykhiy dismissed this information as “false,” as reported by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Saturday. “This information does not correspond to reality. It is fake,” the spokesperson cited Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
This incident comes amid heightened tensions following joint attacks by the US and Israel on Iran since February 28, prompting Iran and its regional allies to strike at Israeli and American interests in the Middle East.
