Mumbai, March 8: Iran has declared that its right to self-defense will continue until the attacks from the United States and Israel cease, or until the United Nations Security Council identifies the aggressor nations and holds them accountable under Article 39 of the UN Charter.
In a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Tehran indicated that the coordinated military assaults by the US and Israel began on February 28, coinciding with the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials.
The ministry reported ongoing attacks on military and civilian infrastructure across the country. These assaults have targeted schools, hospitals, sports centers, residential areas, and public service institutions.
The statement described these actions as blatant violations of Iran’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, asserting that they contravene fundamental principles of international law.
Citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, Tehran emphasized that responding to such brutal military attacks is a legitimate and inherent right of self-defense.
The Foreign Ministry clarified in various letters sent to the UN Security Council that, according to a fundamental principle of international law, no country should allow its territory to be used, directly or indirectly, to harm another nation.
According to the ministry, the unanimously adopted UN General Assembly resolution 3314 reflects the prevailing international law regarding the definition of military aggression. Paragraph (F) of Article 3 states that if a country allows its territory to be used by another nation for aggressive actions against a third country, it is also considered an example of military aggression.
The ministry noted that every country is obligated under international law to prevent its territory from being used for attacks against other nations and to refrain from promoting or cooperating in such actions.
If a country permits its territory to be used for military aggression against another nation, it may face legal responsibilities under international law.
Iran also asserted that responding with military action is its legitimate right, having previously issued warnings at various diplomatic and political levels.
The Iranian defensive actions are reportedly targeting locations and facilities from which aggressive actions against Iran are being launched or are being utilized for such purposes.
Furthermore, Iran claimed that regional countries should now understand that the American military bases on their soil are being used not to enhance regional security but to support the aggressive policies of Israel and the United States.
The ministry reiterated Iran’s commitment to maintaining constructive relations with its neighboring countries and regional partners, emphasizing mutual respect, good neighborly relations, and the respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It clarified that Iran’s defensive actions against American military bases and installations in the region should not be perceived as hostility or enmity towards regional nations.
