New Delhi, April 4: The mini auction for IPL 2026 took place recently, and it was a significant event for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Unlike previous auctions where the focus was on experienced players, CSK shifted its strategy towards youth this time. The management aimed to build a team that not only performs well now but also looks towards the future. However, after the first two matches of IPL 2026, questions are being raised about whether CSK made a mistake in the auction.
CSK acquired Karthik Sharma (19 years) and Prashant Veer (20 years) for ₹14.20 crore each. Both players are uncapped but have shown promise in domestic cricket. Despite their potential, it is surprising that a franchise like CSK would invest such a large amount on relatively inexperienced players. In their domestic T20 careers, Prashant has taken 12 wickets and scored 118 runs in 9 matches, while Karthik has scored 334 runs, including two half-centuries, in 12 matches.
The hefty sums spent on these players raised eyebrows across the cricketing community. Fans and management alike were eager to see how Karthik and Prashant would perform in IPL 2026.
CSK’s first match was against Rajasthan Royals on March 30, where Karthik made his debut, scoring 18 runs off 15 balls. Prashant did not get a chance to play in that match.
In their second match against Punjab Kings on April 3, both Karthik and Prashant were included in the lineup. Karthik managed just 1 run off 3 balls, while Prashant scored 6 runs off 7 balls. Karthik is a wicketkeeper-batsman, but Prashant did not bowl during the match.
Given that this is the early stage of their IPL careers, it is premature to form a judgment about their potential. However, based on their performances so far, the investment in these players seems questionable.
This concern is further highlighted by the performances of two other CSK players. Ayush Mhatre was signed for just ₹30 lakh in IPL 2025 and showcased his talent by scoring 73 runs off 43 balls against Punjab in the recent match. Similarly, Sarfaraz Khan, who joined CSK for ₹75 lakh, scored 32 runs off just 12 balls against Punjab.
Considering the investment in Ayush and Sarfaraz and their impressive performances, it raises the question: Did CSK overpay for Karthik Sharma and Prashant Veer? The answer may become clearer in the upcoming matches.
