Mumbai, 29 December. American tech giant Apple Inc. has achieved a significant milestone in India. Thanks to easy credit options and cashback offers, the iPhone 16 has become the best-selling smartphone in India, surpassing the popular budget model from China’s Vivo.
According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Apple sold nearly 65 lakh units of the iPhone 16 in the first 11 months of 2025, making it the highest-selling smartphone in the country. During this period, Apple outperformed several major Android phone manufacturers.
Vivo’s Y29 5G, supported by BBK Electronics, secured the second position with sales of 47 lakh units. Additionally, the iPhone 15, with 33 lakh units sold, also featured in the top five best-selling smartphones in India.
Apple’s phones, starting at ₹47,000 for the iPhone 15, are priced at more than three times the cost of Vivo’s best-selling handset priced at ₹14,000.
The report highlights that Apple’s success reflects changing consumer behaviour. Earlier, most buyers in India preferred entry-level and mid-range phones, but demand for premium smartphones is now rising.
Apple has adopted a strategy to increase local manufacturing in India, reducing dependency on China. Recently, the company opened three new Apple stores in Bengaluru, Pune, and Noida, bringing its total number of stores in India to five.
To make its expensive phones more accessible, Apple has introduced no-cost EMI, cashback, and bank schemes for customers.
The report also reveals that Apple exported iPhones worth $2 billion from India in November, marking the highest export figure so far. According to company filings, Apple India recorded a domestic sales revenue of $9 billion in the fiscal year 2025, with every fifth iPhone being manufactured or assembled in India.
Apple’s manufacturing in India contributed 12 percent to the global production value. For the first time, the company has started producing expensive Pro and Pro Max models in India.
Company filings further state that Apple earned $178.4 billion in revenue from the US in the fiscal year 2025, accounting for nearly 43 percent of its global revenue, with a growing number of iPhones being shipped from India.
