New Delhi, March 28: Welcome to another season of Minor League Wrap. For the first week, we focus solely on the Iowa Cubs as they kicked off their season this evening, while the other three affiliates will begin next Friday.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs faced off against the Columbus Clippers (Guardians) and secured a 5-2 victory.
Javier Assad took the mound for the Opening Night start. Although he wasn’t at his sharpest, he was effective. Assad held the Clippers scoreless for the first three innings, allowing three hits and walking three batters. His five strikeouts prevented any runs from crossing the plate.
Charlie Barnes, who previously pitched for KBO’s Lotte Giants, followed with three impressive innings. He earned the win after giving up just one hit and no runs, despite walking three batters and striking out seven.
The Clippers managed to score two runs off reliever Ryan Rollison in the seventh inning. However, Collin Snider closed the game with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball, striking out two and earning the save.
The Cubs took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when first baseman Jonathon Long singled, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored following two wild pitches.
The I-Cubs sealed the game with a four-run sixth inning. Center fielder Brett Bateman recorded his first Triple-A hit with an RBI single. Left fielder Justin Dean then tripled home two runs. Long returned to the plate and singled home Dean. He finished the night with two hits and two walks. The four Iowa pitchers combined to strike out 17 batters.
