Internet Subscribers in India Surge by 6% to 1.09 Billion: TRAI Report

New Delhi, June 23: The number of internet subscribers in India has increased by 6.24% on a quarterly basis, reaching 1.09 billion, up from 1.02 billion in December 2025, according to a report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The report indicates that out of the total internet subscribers, 1.04 billion are wireless users, while 46 million access the internet through wired connections. Furthermore, it highlights that there are 1.06 billion broadband subscribers and 26 million narrowband subscribers.

As of March 2026, the broadband subscriber base saw a quarterly growth of 5.81%, while narrowband subscriptions experienced a significant surge of 26.62%.

The wireline tele-density increased from 3.33% at the end of December 2025 to 3.38% by the end of March 2026, reflecting a quarterly growth rate of 1.64%.

The total number of telephone subscribers has risen to 1.33 billion, pushing the overall tele-density from 91.74% in the previous quarter to 93.26%.

Meanwhile, the average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless services increased by 0.76% on a quarterly basis, reaching ₹196.04. Year-on-year, the monthly ARPU has grown by 7.15%.

In March 2026, the average number of prepaid minutes used per user rose to 1,017, up from 1,012 in the quarter ending December 2025, indicating a quarterly increase of 0.43%.

The license fee for the quarter ending December 2025 was ₹6,733 crore, which increased to ₹6,936 crore in the subsequent quarter. The quarterly and annual growth rates for license fees in the March quarter were 3.02% and 9.41%, respectively.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has granted approval for a total of 917 private satellite TV channels for uplinking, downlinking, or both. As of the end of March, 342 of the 908 approved satellite TV channels for downlinking were operational.
