Milan, March 1: Inter Milan rebounded from a disappointing Champions League exit with a solid 2-0 win against Genoa. Gazzetta dello Sport quickly highlighted Lautaro Martinez and Federico Dimarco as the pivotal players who could lead the Nerazzurri to the Scudetto.
“If there is a Scudetto, it will be the Scudetto of Lautaro and Dimarco, the driving forces of this first Chivu-era Inter,” the publication stated, according to FCInterNews.
Both players have been crucial to the club’s domestic success. The absence of Argentine captain Lautaro was notably felt during the match, especially as Gazzetta pointed out the struggles of Thuram and Bonny to form a cohesive partnership. Their similar playing styles hindered effective collaboration, further emphasizing Lautaro’s irreplaceable role.
The match was not without its challenges. Genoa, under coach Daniele De Rossi, started strong. Gazzetta praised De Rossi as a genuine football idealist, particularly for his choice of a technically skilled midfield trio: Baldanzi, Frendrup, and Amorim.
Inter began the match with their usual rhythm, but there was a moment in the second half when a Genoa equalizer seemed possible. However, Chivu’s team gradually regained control, employing what Gazzetta described as an “octopus strategy—methodical, enveloping, and tentacular.”
The first goal came from a brilliant play. Mkhitaryan delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Dimarco, who struck superbly to find the far corner. Genoa’s goalkeeper Bijlow had already denied Bonny twice and Mkhitaryan had hit the crossbar before Inter finally broke the deadlock.
The second goal had a touch of luck. Amorim, a second-half substitute making his San Siro debut, conceded a penalty under pressure, allowing Calhanoglu to seal the victory.
The only concern from an otherwise positive evening was Bonny’s exit due to a right calf issue, adding to Chivu’s growing injury list.
