Indore, 2 January: In Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district, the Bhagirathpura area is witnessing growing anxiety among residents after several deaths have been reported due to consumption of allegedly contaminated water. The incident has raised serious questions about water safety and civic management in the locality.

Speaking to the news agency, a local resident said, “There has been some improvement in the water quality. On Friday, some clean water arrived. But earlier, the water was very dangerous. It was contaminated and foul-smelling.” He added that the municipal corporation is providing water tankers and doctors are continuously monitoring the situation.

A woman shared that earlier they did not use water from the Narmada river, but now they have started using it despite its bitter taste. She mentioned that the problem has worsened over the past week.

An elderly woman noted that this is the first time such a contaminated water issue has been seen in the area. She expressed disappointment that no political leader is listening to the common people. However, she said that after the incident, some clean water has started reaching the locality.

According to Madhav Hasani, Chief Health and Medical Officer (CHMO) of Indore, a total of 272 patients have been admitted to various hospitals due to contaminated water consumption. Out of these, 72 patients were discharged by 1 January, while 201 remain hospitalised, including 32 in the ICU.

Hasani confirmed that laboratory analysis proved the water contamination caused illness and several deaths. He reported that more than 8,500 people were medically examined on Thursday. Among them, 338 new patients from over 1,700 households in Bhagirathpura were identified. All newly detected patients received primary treatment at their homes.
