New Delhi, August 25: Rajeev Gupta, Chairman of Assocham’s National Council on Defense and Aerospace, stated on Tuesday that India’s increasing role in the global defense market will depend on how determined the country is to seize available opportunities. He emphasized that India has significant potential in defense and aerospace manufacturing, but turning these opportunities into tangible achievements requires collaboration among industry, government, and other stakeholders.
Speaking to reporters during Assocham’s national conference on aerospace and defense manufacturing, Gupta noted that this initiative will help all parties involved in the defense and aerospace sector better understand industry needs, national requirements, and key factors driving development.
He remarked, “Assocham’s initiative is crucial as it enables all stakeholders in the defense and aerospace sectors to grasp the industry’s needs, the nation’s expectations, and, most importantly, the capable factors required to achieve these goals.”
Gupta pointed out that there is no shortage of opportunities for India in the global defense market. However, he cautioned that if the country does not demonstrate a clear strategy and commitment to capitalize on these opportunities, they will remain mere possibilities.
He stated, “India’s growth in the global defense market depends on the decisions we make as Indians. The opportunities are vast, but if we are not fully committed to achieving them, they will remain opportunities only on paper and never materialize.”
According to Gupta, the conference included extensive discussions on necessary measures to strengthen the defense sector and facilitate its future expansion. Key issues addressed included enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities, strengthening technological self-reliance, and broadening the supply chain.
He highlighted that the Indian industry is continuously providing advanced products to the armed forces, which have been developed in India and proven their capabilities in challenging operational conditions. This is promoting indigenous defense manufacturing and reducing dependence on imports.
Gupta specifically mentioned the role of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), noting that the industry has made significant strides in establishing a robust domestic supply network. Major defense companies have developed numerous MSMEs and local supplier partners, increasing the availability of essential components and systems for defense production within the country.
He concluded, “To achieve this goal, we have developed several MSMEs and local supplier partners.” He expressed confidence that efforts to enhance localization and strengthen India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem will continue in the future.
