Washington, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : A family led by Revant Ruia, originally from India, has announced plans for the largest steel plant in U.S. history during an event at the White House with President Donald Trump. Ruia described the investment in the U.S. steel sector as a “homecoming.”
“I was born in India, but I spent my high school years in New York and attended college in Boston, later earning my MBA in California,” Ruia stated. “Having spent half my life here, it is an honor to announce this investment, which truly feels like a return home.”
The family intends to connect an iron ore mine in Minnesota to the proposed steel complex in southeastern Iowa. When asked about the total investment, Ruia mentioned it would be “approximately $18 billion.” However, figures shared during the event varied. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick referenced a $2.5 billion mine and a $15 billion steel plant, totaling $17.5 billion, while Ruia indicated a $3 billion investment in the mine. No explanation was offered for the discrepancies.
Trump highlighted that the Iowa plant would utilize ore from Minnesota to produce 10 million tons of steel annually. He estimated the project could create up to 6,000 jobs in construction and nearly 2,000 in manufacturing and mining, although steel production has yet to commence.
This announcement places the Ruia family’s business at the forefront of Trump’s initiative to boost steel production in the U.S. Ravi Ruia, the founder of Essar Group, noted that he and his brother Shashi began their business decades ago, establishing steel plants, refineries, ports, and power plants.
“We have now decided to embark on the next major chapter of our business in the U.S.,” Ravi Ruia said. He described the Iowa plant as a proposed project where the company would leverage its experience working with the American steel industry.
Revant Ruia added that the Minnesota mine would supply the Iowa plant, which will also involve U.S. railways and the energy sector. “This project will mark a new chapter for our company and our family,” he stated.
Concerns arose regarding public support for the project. When asked about potential government funding and tax incentives in Iowa, Lutnick confirmed that the Export-Import Bank had assisted with financing for the mine. He clarified that the steel plant would be funded privately and noted that agreements were already in place, though details on financing terms and construction schedules were not disclosed.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds acknowledged the challenging negotiations but welcomed the project for its potential job creation and benefits for local suppliers. She emphasized the desire for Iowa businesses to collaborate with Mesabi Metallics, a company Trump mentioned during the announcement.
Trump referred to the Iowa plant as the largest steel plant in American history, stating that construction-related jobs would begin almost immediately.
Essar’s plans unite two regions historically involved in steel production. Minnesota’s Iron Range has supplied iron ore for over a century, while Midwest plants have continuously transformed ore and other materials into steel for manufacturing and construction.
Such a large-scale project will require years of construction, equipment installation, and commissioning to reach its intended production capacity. The investment and job estimates shared at the White House remain preliminary projections.
