Experts Call for Formal Education to Elevate Indias Jewelry Industry

Kolkata, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : Experts in the jewelry sector have stressed the importance of integrating skill-based education into formal training to preserve traditional craftsmanship and engage the younger generation. They believe that artisans are the backbone of the industry.

Vinod Bamalwa, President of the National Expert Committee on Jewelry and Lifestyle at the Indian Chamber of Commerce, highlighted that one of the biggest challenges facing the jewelry industry is the reluctance of new artisans to enter the field. He pointed out that the lack of formal recognition for this work as a vocational education path is a significant barrier.

Bamalwa stated that linking jewelry-making skills to academic degrees and certifications could enhance youth interest in this profession. He noted that the government is working to introduce jewelry-making and related technical subjects in schools from grades 8 to 10, in collaboration with the industry.

“The industry has pledged full support for this initiative. If skill training is linked to degrees or formal recognition, it will help prepare the next generation of artisans and preserve traditional art,” he said.

Bamalwa also mentioned that a government minister assured industry representatives that they could work without concerns, promising solutions to any obstacles that may arise. The government aims to give skill-based training the same respect and recognition as higher education, necessitating industry collaboration, which has already begun positively.

Suvankar Sen, Co-Chairman of the National Expert Committee on Jewelry and Lifestyle and Managing Director of Senco Gold and Diamonds, noted that West Bengal has a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship. Many artisans from Bengal work in major jewelry hubs like Mumbai, Surat, and South India. He emphasized the need for both industry and government to ensure that this art and skill are passed down to future generations.

Sen explained that education related to the jewelry industry extends beyond just making jewelry. It encompasses subjects like metallurgy, marketing, sales techniques, and product management. He believes that incorporating such education at the school and college levels could provide youth with new employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

He reiterated the necessity of merging education and skill training to develop the jewelry sector into a well-organized professional industry. Furthermore, he revealed that the government has established a special task force to ensure students receive training and education that significantly benefit their careers.

Sen concluded that if the industry and educational institutions collaborate on curriculum development, skill development and knowledge training will be more effective. The main goal of the government’s initiative is to align education with industry needs.
