Indias First Cheetah Mukhi Celebrates Third Birthday, CM Expresses Joy

Bhopal, March 30: India’s first cheetah, Mukhi, born under the ambitious ‘Project Cheetah’, celebrated her third birthday on Sunday. This milestone is seen as a significant success in Madhya Pradesh’s efforts for wildlife conservation and the reintroduction of extinct species in the country.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav shared this joyful news on social media, posting beautiful pictures of Mukhi and calling it a proud moment for both the state and the nation. He celebrated Mukhi’s third birthday on his official X account, stating that this reflects the right direction of the conservation program and gives international recognition to Madhya Pradesh’s efforts.

Forest department officials are continuously monitoring the cheetahs, ensuring the protection of their habitat and the cooperation of local communities. This achievement has sparked hope that cheetahs will roam freely in India once again, restoring a vital part of the country’s natural heritage.

Mukhi was born on March 29, 2023, to Namibian cheetah Jwala at Kuno National Park. Initially a weak cub abandoned by her mother, Mukhi has now grown into a healthy adult and gave birth to five cubs herself in November 2025. Her journey symbolizes the growing success of ‘Project Cheetah’.

Kuno National Park, located in the Sheopur and Morena districts of Madhya Pradesh, stretches along the Kuno River. It was declared a national park in 2018, covering an area of approximately 748 square kilometers, with the core zone being about 344 square kilometers.

The forest environment here is suitable for cheetahs, distinguishing it from other parks like Kanha and Bandhavgarh. The park is home to deer, sambar, chital, blackbuck, and over 200 species of birds.

The cheetah rehabilitation program began on September 17, 2022, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi released eight cheetahs from Namibia into Kuno National Park after a 70-year absence. Since then, this park has become a focal point of international attention.
