New Delhi, July 1: Former Marketing Director of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Sukhamal Kumar Jain, stated on Wednesday that India’s energy security is now a robust system rather than just a policy. Over the past years, the government has diversified crude oil import sources, increased refining capacity, developed strategic petroleum reserves, and established strong coordination with public sector oil companies. This proactive approach ensured that the availability of petrol, diesel, and LPG was not affected during the global energy crisis.
In an exclusive interview with a news agency, Jain emphasized that India maintained continuous communication with all its international partners. There was ongoing coordination among the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Petroleum, shipping agencies, and oil companies. The primary goal was to ensure that energy supply remained uninterrupted. Thanks to this active diplomacy and coordinated efforts, LPG cargoes continued to arrive safely in India.
Jain further noted that this coordination was the key strength behind this success. Regular review meetings among ministries, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, gas companies, and state governments allowed for close monitoring of every situation. Adequate stock was maintained, and accurate information was disseminated to the public, preventing panic or unnecessary purchases.
He added that over the past 11 years, India has made significant investments in refinery modernization, pipeline networks, LNG terminals, city gas distribution, and strategic petroleum reserves. This strong foundation proved invaluable during crises. Today, India is in a much more capable, resilient, and secure position regarding energy.
The former BPCL director explained that having diverse sources significantly reduces risks in case of a crisis in any one area. Currently, India imports crude oil from over 40 countries. This strategy strengthens energy security and reduces dependence on any single route or region.
