Indian Womens Team Triumphs Over England by 38 Runs in First T20 Match

Chelmsford, May 29: The Indian women’s cricket team kicked off their tour of England with a resounding victory. In the first T20 International match, India showcased an impressive performance, defeating England by 38 runs. Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia played pivotal roles, both scoring half-centuries, while debutant Nandini Sharma excelled with three wickets.

Chasing a target of 189 runs set by India, England managed to score only 150 runs, losing 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. The English innings began poorly, with Alice Capsey returning to the pavilion after scoring just 6 runs. Sophia Dunkley also fell early, making 16 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed by Kranti Gaud. At 37 runs, England found themselves in trouble with two wickets down, but Heather Knight and Amy Jones steadied the ship with a crucial partnership of 64 runs for the third wicket.

Knight scored 21 runs off 24 balls, hitting 2 fours, while Jones delivered a remarkable performance, scoring 67 runs off 48 balls, including 9 fours. Unfortunately, she lacked support from her teammates, as Freya Kemp managed only 8 runs before being dismissed, and Danielle Gibson did not score. Captain Charlie Dean remained not out at 11 runs. For India, Nandini Sharma was the standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for 34 runs in her debut match, while Kranti Gaud claimed 2 wickets. Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma each took 1 wicket.

Earlier, India’s innings also got off to a rocky start. In the absence of Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, who captained the side, was dismissed on the very first ball. Shafali Verma contributed just 2 runs. However, Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues took charge, forming a crucial partnership of 126 runs for the third wicket off 76 balls.

Yastika scored 54 runs off 40 balls, hitting 9 fours and 1 six, while Jemimah delivered an outstanding innings of 69 runs off 40 balls. Richa Ghosh struggled with the bat, scoring only 4 runs, while Deepti Sharma added 22 runs off 13 balls. For England, Lauren Bell was the leading wicket-taker with 3 wickets, while Charlie Dean and Issy Wong took 1 wicket each. With this victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20 series.
