Indian Womens T20 World Cup Team Announcement Scheduled for Saturday

Mumbai, May 1: The Indian women’s team for the T20 World Cup 2026 will be announced on Saturday evening at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. However, the selectors will face several dilemmas before finalizing the squad.

The 10th edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup is set to take place in England from June 12 to July 5. India is keenly eyeing the title.

The selection committee meeting will occur at the BCCI headquarters, followed by a press conference to unveil the team.

Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, there are high expectations for the team, especially after India won the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 on home soil.

Last December, India convincingly defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 at home. They then triumphed over England in their backyard and secured a 2-1 victory against Australia. However, the team faced a setback last month during their tour of South Africa, losing 4-1.

During the South Africa tour, the management experimented with several players, resting vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and giving opportunities to new options. Nevertheless, the bowling department remains a concern for the team.

While a significant portion of the squad seems almost finalized, the selection committee led by Amita Sharma must make crucial decisions for a 15-member team.

Batting all-rounder Anushka Sharma and left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma recently made their debuts and performed well. Additionally, power hitter Bharti Fulmali, returning after a long absence, has also strengthened her case for selection.

It will be interesting to see if these three players secure spots in the T20 World Cup team, especially since the host nation, England, has selected three left-arm spinners for this 12-team tournament.

Saturday’s meeting will not only focus on the T20 World Cup team. The selectors will also choose the squad for the three-match T20 series against England and a single Test match scheduled at Lord’s from July 10 to 13.

Furthermore, the India A team will also be selected for three ODIs and three T20 matches against England A.

If India opts for additional pace bowling options for the World Cup, Nandini Sharma, who excelled for Delhi Capitals in WPL 2026, may get a chance.

The selection of Nandini Sharma and Kashvi Gautam, who made their T20 debuts during the South Africa tour, will be intriguing, especially with Amanjot Kaur potentially sidelined due to a back injury.

For the T20 series against England from May 8 to June 2, selectors may choose a 17 or 18-member team, which could open the door for Vaishnavi Sharma as well.

However, competition within the team is fierce, putting players like Radha Yadav, Sneh Rana, and G Kamalini at risk of missing out on the World Cup squad.

Radha Yadav’s situation is particularly noteworthy. She took six wickets during India’s T20 series in England last year but has not played in this format since then.

In WPL 2026, Radha performed well for RCB, scoring 114 runs in nine matches, including a top score of 66, but managed only two wickets.

Subsequently, while captaining India A at the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament in Bangkok, Radha scored 75 runs and took 10 wickets.

In the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy, Radha scored 224 runs in four innings, including a century, and secured 12 wickets, ranking second in both batting and bowling.

Yastika Bhatia, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, underwent ACL surgery after a knee injury during last year’s ODI World Cup preparation camp in Visakhapatnam. She has now resumed training.

It remains to be seen whether she will replace Uma Chhetri as the second wicketkeeper or make her return through India A first.

Standby players for the World Cup may also be part of the India A team, as they will be touring England simultaneously.

Harleen Deol and Pratika Rawal are likely to be sent with the India A team to acclimatize to local conditions and prepare for the lone Test match.

The T20 World Cup is fast approaching, and Saturday’s selection meeting in Mumbai will significantly shape India’s hopes for their first Women’s T20 World Cup trophy.
