
Perth, May 27: The Indian women’s hockey team secured a hard-fought victory against Australia on Wednesday, leveling the four-match friendly series at 1-1. The match, held at the Perth Hockey Stadium, saw the visiting team come back to draw 1-1 after trailing in the final quarter, ultimately winning 4-2 in the shootout.
Australia took the lead in the 10th minute with a goal from Olivia Downs. However, the Indian team began to apply pressure with several penalty corner opportunities. Despite a strong Australian defense, Sheila Chanu Pukhrembam equalized for India in the 46th minute, scoring in the last quarter.
In the shootout, India triumphed 4-2, with goals from Navneet Kaur, Ishika Chaudhary, Annu, and Rituja Dadaso Pisal.
Earlier, the friendly series began on Tuesday with a closely contested match, where Australia narrowly won 2-1 in Perth. India initially took the lead in the first quarter when Navneet Kaur converted a penalty corner. The Indian defense held strong for most of the first half, maintaining their advantage until Australia turned the tide in the second half. AB Wilson capitalized on two penalty corner opportunities, scoring in the third and fourth quarters to secure the win for the host team.
The third match of the series is scheduled for May 29 at 11:00 AM at the same stadium.
