
New Delhi, June 7: The Indian women’s 4×100 meter relay team delivered an outstanding performance at the New Taipei Athletics Open on Saturday. They not only clinched the gold medal but also set a new meet record. This event is a significant international competition within the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver category.
The quartet of Shrabani Nanda, S.S. Sneha, Sudeshna Shivankar, and Tamanna clocked an impressive time of 44.07 seconds at the Banqiao Stadium in Taiwan. With this achievement, they broke the previous meet record and secured victory over Vietnam by a comfortable margin of 0.31 seconds, with Vietnam finishing in second place.
In addition to the relay victory, India also excelled in field events. Promising long jumper Shaili Singh won the gold medal in the women’s long jump competition, achieving a personal best of 6.24 meters. Her performance added another gold to India’s medal tally at the meet.
Tejas Shirse also made his mark on the track, earning a silver medal in the men’s 110 meters hurdles. In a competitive race, Tejas showcased his talent and finished in second place. This performance continued his upward trajectory in the hurdles event.
Earlier, Tejas had won gold at the National Championships with a time of 13.50 seconds. He improved upon his own meet record of 13.61 seconds but missed qualifying for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) due to the required qualification time of 13.39 seconds.
Previously, the Indian women’s relay team also performed admirably at the Under-20 Athletics Championships, where India secured a record 19 medals. The women’s 4×100 meter relay team claimed the silver medal with a time of 45.05 seconds, featuring members Kajal Hirabhai Waja, Bhavna Ji, Aarti, and Nipam. The Indian men’s 4×400 meter relay team also improved the meet record with a time of 3:07.38, finishing in third place with team members Piyush Raj, Syed Sabir, Ranjit Kumar S, and Mohammad Ashfaque.
