Indian Stock Market Opens Strong Amid Global Optimism, Realty and Defense Sectors Lead Gains

Mumbai, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian stock market opened on a high note on Friday, September 18, 2026. The Sensex rose by 260.65 points, or 0.35%, reaching 74,575.24. Meanwhile, the Nifty gained 64.10 points, or 0.28%, to settle at 23,334.70.

Early trading was buoyed by strong performances in the defense and real estate sectors, with Nifty India Defense and Nifty Realty emerging as the top gainers. Other sectors, including Nifty Metal, Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, Nifty Energy, Nifty Infra, Nifty Auto, and Nifty Private Bank, also showed positive trends, while Nifty IT was the only index trading in the red.

Large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks all exhibited strength. The Nifty Midcap 100 Index climbed 342 points, or 0.56%, to reach 61,775, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 Index rose by 172 points, or 0.88%, to 19,708.

Within the Sensex pack, stocks such as Eternal, Indigo, L&T, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, Adani Ports, Asian Paints, BEL, HDFC Bank, UltraTech Cement, Maruti Suzuki, Titan, and Bajaj Finserv were among the gainers. Conversely, TCS, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Tata Steel, Infosys, HUL, Trent, NTPC, ITC, and Kotak Mahindra Bank faced losses.

Experts noted that the ongoing bullish trend in the Indian primary market has created opportunities for secondary market investors. Attention is shifting towards the IPO market and potential listing gains. As a result, the secondary market has become sluggish, with large-cap stock prices declining. This presents a buying opportunity for long-term investors, particularly in major banks, capital goods companies, and select automotive and pharmaceutical sectors.

Globally, most markets exhibited positive trends. Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Seoul reported gains, while Jakarta was in the red. The U.S. stock market closed higher on Thursday, with the Dow Jones up by 0.61% and the technology index Nasdaq rising by 1.69%.
