New Delhi, August 13: Since 1982, India and Sri Lanka have faced each other in a total of 46 Test matches. India has won 22 of these encounters, while Sri Lanka has claimed victory in 7. Here, we explore the matches where the winning margins were the largest.
One of the most significant victories came with a win by an innings and 239 runs. Both teams achieved this margin against each other. Sri Lanka first accomplished this feat in July 2008, followed by India in November 2017 in Nagpur.
Another notable match was in March 2022, where India triumphed by an innings and 222 runs at Mohali. India declared their first innings at 574/8, thanks to Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 175. Sri Lanka struggled, managing only 174 runs in their first innings and 178 in their second. Jadeja was named ‘Player of the Match’ for taking a total of 9 wickets across both innings.
In August 2017, India secured a victory by an innings and 171 runs in Pallekele. The Indian team scored 487 runs in their first innings, driven by centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (119) and Hardik Pandya (108). Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 135 runs in their first innings and forced to follow on, only to be dismissed for 181 in their second.
In November 2009, India won by an innings and 144 runs in Kanpur. Batting first, India scored 642 runs, with Gautam Gambhir (167), Virender Sehwag (131), and Rahul Dravid (144) all making centuries. Sri Lanka managed only 229 runs in their first innings and 269 in their second.
Lastly, in January 1994, India won by an innings and 119 runs in Lucknow. India set a formidable target with 511 runs, bolstered by centuries from Navjot Singh Sidhu (124) and Sachin Tendulkar (142). Sri Lanka could only muster 218 runs in their first innings and fell short with 174 runs in their second.
