
New Delhi, July 1: Indian Railways has approved a ₹226 crore project aimed at modernizing the signaling infrastructure in the Durga-Taroki section of the South East Central Railway (SECR) in the Raipur division. This initiative is considered a significant step towards enhancing the safety, reliability, and technology-driven operations of the railway system.
According to an official statement, the project will replace the existing panel interlocking (PI) system at 13 stations with a state-of-the-art electronic interlocking (EI) system. The Ministry of Railways has indicated that this upgrade will lead to safer, more automated, and technologically advanced train operations.
The project will encompass stations including Maroda, Risama, Gundardehi, Latabod, Balod, Kusumkasa, Dalli Rajhara, Gudum, Bhanupatrapur, Kevti, Antagarh, Taroki, and the Raipur store depot.
The Ministry stated that transitioning from panel interlocking to electronic interlocking will modernize the signaling system of this crucial railway segment, enhancing operational flexibility and system reliability.
Electronic interlocking is an advanced signaling system that automates route setting and signal operations for trains, incorporating several additional safety measures. Compared to traditional panel interlocking, this system is deemed more reliable, flexible, and technically proficient. It also proves to be more effective in quickly restoring services during disruptions.
The Ministry of Railways emphasized that this project will improve the safety and reliability of train operations, enhance punctuality, and efficiently manage the increasing passenger and freight traffic on the South East Central Railway network.
According to Indian Railways, this initiative is part of a broader campaign to equip the railway signaling system across the country with modern technology, aiming to make the railway network safer, smarter, and more efficient.
The Ministry noted that the implementation of the new system will reduce technical failures related to signaling, enhance the safety of train movements, and better meet the growing demands for passenger and freight transportation in the future.
