New Delhi, July 1: Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is engulfed in turmoil. For months, residents have been protesting for their rights. Recently, security forces’ brutal actions resulted in the deaths of 18 innocent people. Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the opposition leader in the Pakistani parliament, expressed his anguish over these events, drawing a parallel to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
The senior politician shared video clips from a press conference on his X account. During the briefing held on June 29, Achakzai highlighted the brutal face of the Pakistani government, stating, “You have taken the lives of 18 people in a sensitive area. If you wish to kill more, go ahead. This will become another Jallianwala Bagh. Remember the fate of General Dyer afterward.”
He recalled, “When Queen Elizabeth visited India a hundred years later, the Indian government demanded an apology for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.”
Achakzai expressed the pain of the people in POK, stating, “The people here did not resort to knives, daggers, or guns. Why were they pushed to such extremes? They were shot at, and more than 11 lives were lost.”
He claimed that various organizations had contacted him, saying, “Brother, stand between us and the government.”
Issuing a stark warning to the government, Achakzai said, “If you have the courage, send us to jail too. You have sentenced 70-year-old prisoners in Kot Lakhpat Jail to 280 years. Why all this? Fear the Almighty.”
Indeed, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, a 70-year-old politician and former health minister of Punjab, has been sentenced to 280 years in prison for her involvement in violent protests.
He pointed out the rampant corruption in Pakistan, saying, “Those who buy and sell seats in parliament become heroes, while those who desire a democratic Pakistan are labeled traitors. Why are you pressuring your own people? This contradicts your declared ideology. You do not consider election and assembly buying wrong, but label those who oppose it as traitors. Has your judgment become clouded?”
