Mumbai, July 1: Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde congratulated Sachin Ahir on his unanimous election as the Deputy Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. He described Ahir as a multifaceted personality and a ‘master blaster’ in both politics and social service.
Shinde remarked, “Every individual has their unique style of working, but as Sachin Ahir, our team has found a true all-rounder. No matter the bowler or the speed of delivery, Sachin Ahir never stops hitting sixes. Just as Sachin Tendulkar is a legend in cricket, Sachin Ahir is a prominent name in politics and social work. While one Sachin retired from cricket, the other has taken on new responsibilities to start a remarkable new innings.”
He recalled that the party had voted for Ahir as a Shiv Sena candidate in 2019, emphasizing that he remains a dedicated Shiv Sainik. Shinde expressed pride that after Neelam Gorhe, another Shiv Sena leader has taken on this prestigious constitutional role.
In praise of Ahir’s calm demeanor and enduring popularity, Shinde quoted a couplet in Urdu: “Those who remain calm in storms are called the ocean… those who rule every heart are called Alexander.” He noted that despite being a three-time MLA and a state minister, Ahir has never severed ties with the common man.
Shinde also commended Ahir’s social initiatives through the Sankalp Pratishthan, which transformed the traditional Dahi Handi festival into a platform for social service, medical camps, and blood donation drives, reflecting Balasaheb Thackeray’s mantra of “80% social work and 20% politics.”
Advising the new Deputy Chairman on the seriousness of his role, Shinde emphasized the need for complete neutrality in the chair. He stated that once Ahir assumes that position, party rules take precedence, traditions outweigh emotions, and silence becomes more powerful than voice.
He further mentioned that these rules apply equally to the ruling party, urging Ahir to ensure justice for the opposition. Shinde asserted that political parties should be set aside; only B.R. Ambedkar’s Constitution and the principles of true justice should shine through.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar noted that the late Ajit Pawar recognized Ahir’s leadership potential at a young age and provided him with significant political opportunities. She emphasized that the relationship between Ajit Pawar and Sachin Ahir transcended politics, rooted in deep familial affection. Sunetra Pawar stated that Ajit always prioritized capability and competence.
Eknath Shinde acknowledged that he entrusted Ahir with significant responsibilities within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) due to his leadership abilities. He added that even after joining Shiv Sena, Ahir maintained close contact with Ajit Pawar while managing the party’s organization in Pune.
Chairman Ram Shinde congratulated Sachin Ahir on his election as Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council, stating that it is now time for Ahir to put down the batsman’s bat and don the umpire’s cap. He expressed hope that, like an umpire, Sachin Ahir would conduct the house proceedings with balance, patience, and complete impartiality.
Referring to the cricket analogy used earlier by Eknath Shinde, Ram Shinde remarked that while Sachin Bhau may have scored boundaries and sixes as a batsman, his role in the house is now that of an umpire. Therefore, he should lower his bat, wear the umpire’s cap, and ensure equal justice for both sides while conducting the house.
