New Delhi, September 26 (Daily Kiran) : The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has formally requested the Ministry of Civil Aviation to involve professional pilots in the independent review process of the final investigation report concerning the Air India flight AI171 accident. The organization emphasizes the necessity of an independent examination of key technical points that emerged during the investigation.
In a letter addressed to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, FIP stated it has learned that the government or ministry is considering an independent review of the draft final report prepared by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). The pilots’ organization insists that if such a review committee is formed, FIP should be given formal representation as an independent technical stakeholder. This inclusion would allow the professional pilot community’s insights and experiences to inform the review process.
FIP’s letter highlights its belief that the representation of the pilot community is essential before the draft report is finalized or released. The pilots possess practical experience related to aircraft operations and flight safety, which could significantly contribute to the review.
This request comes as the AAIB approaches the final stages of its investigation into the AI171 accident, which occurred on June 12, 2025. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft was en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. In July, the AAIB informed the Supreme Court that it expects to complete the final investigation report by October 2026.
The investigation adheres to India’s aircraft accident investigation regulations and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Annex 13 framework.
Among the technical issues raised by FIP, the concern regarding the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is particularly significant. The RAT is an emergency system that automatically activates to provide energy and hydraulic assistance when a critical failure occurs in the aircraft’s main power system.
According to FIP, the AAIB’s preliminary report indicated that a disruption in the fuel system occurred around 08:08:42 UTC, with hydraulic power generated via the RAT approximately four seconds later. The organization argues that this and other technical findings should undergo independent scrutiny to ensure the final report is grounded in factual and technical analysis.
FIP asserts that accident investigations are not solely about establishing accountability; they are also crucial for preventing future incidents and enhancing aviation safety. Therefore, a fair and comprehensive review of all significant technical points is vital before drawing final conclusions.
The organization emphasizes that the expertise and operational experience of professional pilots can improve the understanding of investigation findings and make safety recommendations more effective. Thus, should the government establish an independent review mechanism, it is essential to formally include the pilot community.
