Kolkata, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Eastern Railway (ER) has commenced the implementation of new technology on weighbridges to enhance the safety and efficiency of freight transport. Officials stated that this initiative aims to reduce derailments, prevent accidents, and ensure track safety. They described it as a significant technological advancement to secure the movement of freight trains and maintain a seamless supply chain across the network.
A senior official revealed that as part of an ongoing modernization effort, Eastern Railway is installing an Advanced Wheel-Wise Load Imbalance Detection System on strategic weighbridges. This technology is designed to detect deviations from safe weight limits before service disruptions occur, allowing for proactive maintenance and the prevention of potential transport hazards.
Under this system, sensors collect load data and transmit it to a central controller. The software determines static and dynamic wheel loads, left-to-right load ratios, and impact load factors, identifying issues such as uneven loading, overloaded axles, or flat spots. Real-time alerts are sent directly to officials for corrective actions.
The first Wheel-Wise Load Imbalance Detection System was successfully activated at the Pakur In-Motion Weighing Bridge. Initial test results have been promising, and the system will be fully operational once final certification is obtained from the state government. Meanwhile, a similar weighbridge is being established in Kotalpukur.
This initiative is part of ER’s broader plan to extend this safety measure to other critical freight hubs in the region. Pakur, a key freight center in Jharkhand, transports large quantities of coal from the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) siding and the Gati Shakti terminal to power plants in West Bengal and Punjab.
Additionally, Pakur is renowned for its stone quarries, where ER transports significant volumes of crushed stone, aggregates, and track ballast using specialized wagons.
