Bengaluru, May 27: The 8th Indian Open International Para Athletics Championship 2026 kicked off with impressive performances on its first day. Athletes from India and abroad showcased thrilling competitions in track and field events in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
One of the standout performances came in the men’s 100 meters T12 category. Chaitanya Pathak from Maharashtra clinched the gold medal with a time of 11.39 seconds. Vishu from Haryana followed closely, securing the silver medal with a time of 11.42 seconds, while Gautam Karanam from Andhra Pradesh took home the bronze with a time of 11.75 seconds.
In the men’s 100 meters T47 event, Kerala sprinter Mohammad Basil Morasinghankath won gold with a time of 10.63 seconds. Dilip Gavit from Maharashtra gave a tough competition, finishing with a silver medal time of 10.64 seconds, while Babu Janu Pandaramise from Karnataka earned bronze with a time of 11.19 seconds.
Vivek Sharma from Punjab triumphed in the men’s 100 meters T63 category, clocking in at 12.92 seconds for gold. Arpit from Haryana secured silver with a time of 13.00 seconds, and Sandeep Kumar from Uttar Pradesh achieved bronze with a time of 13.40 seconds.
In the men’s long jump T47 event, Tokyo Paralympic silver medalist Nishad Kumar leaped an impressive 7.34 meters to win gold for Himachal Pradesh. Arjun Singh from Rajasthan finished second with a jump of 6.81 meters, while Sri Lanka’s Safaran Mohammedu took bronze with a distance of 6.72 meters.
In the men’s discus throw F64 competition, Pradeep Kumar from SSCB won gold with his best throw of 50.47 meters, narrowly beating Devender Kumar from Haryana, who secured silver with a throw of 50.44 meters. Rakesh from SSCB earned bronze with a throw of 49.67 meters.
In the women’s shot put F57 category, Sharmila from Haryana delivered an outstanding performance, winning gold with a throw of 9.86 meters. Kanchugarakoppa Sheila Shilpa from Karnataka took silver with a throw of 6.67 meters, while Poonam Sharma from Haryana claimed bronze with a throw of 6.46 meters.
Karnataka athlete Rakshita Raju dominated the women’s 1500 meters T11 race, winning gold with a time of 5:17.54. Shalini Chaudhary from Rajasthan earned silver with a time of 6:07.55, while Kyrgyzstan’s Gulnaz Juzbayeva secured bronze with a time of 6:19.58.
This championship will continue until May 28, featuring top para athletes from India and several other countries competing in various sports.
