The commissioning of Mahe marks the arrival of a new generation of indigenous shallow-water combat vessels — sleek, fast and fully Indian-built. With over 80% indigenous components, the Mahe-class warship reflects India’s growing expertise in design, construction and integration. Positioned as a ‘silent hunter’ along the western coastline, the vessel will strengthen India’s maritime security with self-reliance at its core.

Built at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Mahe represents a major milestone in India’s efforts towards indigenous naval shipbuilding. Compact yet powerful, the vessel offers agility, precision and endurance — all essential for dominating coastal operations.

Equipped with a mix of firepower, manoeuvrability and advanced systems, the ship is designed for submarine detection, coastal patrol and securing vital maritime routes. Named after the historic coastal town of Mahe on the Malabar coast, the ship bears the emblem “Urumi” on its crest.

Commanding Officer A.C. Chaubey said, “This is the first shallow-water craft designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited. It carries fully indigenous weapons and sensors, including a naval surface gun, indigenous rocket launcher, torpedoes, decoys and a stabilised remote-controlled gun. Its sensor suite includes a sonar system and LFVDS.”

Lieutenant Commander Pransh Sharma added, “Mahe is the first vessel of its class built by CSL, with 80% indigenous components. The onboard Naval Surface Gun helps neutralise enemy targets in surface and aerial domains, while the L&T system assists in countering enemy submarines and torpedoes.”
