Indian Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh Attends Deck Reception on INS Sandhyak in Yangon

Yangon, April 9: Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, participated in a ‘deck reception’ aboard the Indian Navy’s survey vessel INS Sandhyak in Yangon, Myanmar, on Wednesday. He is in Myanmar to attend the inauguration ceremony of the country’s new president.

Singh is scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Min Aung Hlaing in the capital Naypyidaw on April 10.

On social media platform X, Singh shared insights from discussions with senior officials, highlighting the deep ties between India and Myanmar. He noted that the visit of INS Sandhyak aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the oceans.

Upon his arrival in Yangon, Singh was welcomed by Abhay Thakur, India’s Ambassador to Myanmar, and U Jo Phyo Win, the Director-General of Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Singh is on a four-day visit to Myanmar from April 8 to 11. During this time, he will hold meetings with senior officials of the Myanmar government, discuss bilateral issues related to trade, economic, and development cooperation, and engage with the Indian community.

The Myanmar Embassy also announced on X that Singh will interact with government representatives as well as friends of India and the Indian diaspora during his visit.

Notably, Min Aung Hlaing was elected president on April 3, securing the highest votes among three candidates. His two vice presidents, Nyo Saw and Nain Nyi Nyi A, are affiliated with the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

Before assuming the presidency, Min Aung Hlaing stepped down as military chief, handing over responsibilities to General Ye Win Oo. He has been in power in Myanmar since 2021, with the USDP winning elections held in December 2025 and January 2026.

Experts believe that the formation of a new government in Myanmar, after five years of political deadlock, could enhance domestic and regional stability.
