Efforts Intensify to Halt Ukraine-Russia War as UK, France, and Germany Support Direct Talks

London, June 8: Leaders from the UK, France, and Germany have expressed their support for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. They believe that such discussions could facilitate a ceasefire and advance peace talks. This statement followed a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in London.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Zelensky issued a joint statement after their meeting. They emphasized their backing for direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia and called for active involvement from both the United States and Europe.

According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, the leaders demanded an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. They stated that discussions should be based on the current front line.

The statement also highlighted the essential role Europe must play in the peace process. All efforts in this direction should be coordinated with Ukraine, European partner countries, and the United States.

The leaders also discussed Ukraine’s security arrangements following a ceasefire. They noted that any agreement must consider European security interests. Additionally, decisions related to the European Union (EU) and NATO will require the consent of their member states.

Earlier on Thursday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that if Zelensky wishes to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he is welcome to come to Moscow.

This comment was in response to Zelensky’s open letter proposing a face-to-face meeting with Putin to discuss the peace process.

In his letter, Zelensky wrote, “Ukraine proposes to end this war through direct dialogue between us. I invite you to meet.” He also suggested involving Europe and the United States in this process.

Zelensky emphasized that waiting for the U.S. to refocus on ending the Russia-Ukraine war is not a viable option, as their current attention is on the ongoing conflict with Iran.

He called for a specific date for the meeting and stated that Ukraine is fully prepared to implement a ceasefire during the discussions.

Zelensky also mentioned that Switzerland, Turkey, and several Arab nations have expressed a willingness to host such talks.
