Indian Climbers Set to Conquer Mount Aconcagua in Argentina

New Delhi, February 5: A team of Indian climbers is preparing to scale Mount Aconcagua, Argentina’s highest peak. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh officially launched the expedition from South Block (Ministry of Defense) on Thursday.

The team comprises climbers from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi, and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Pahalgam. Mount Aconcagua stands at approximately 6,961 meters, making it the tallest peak in South America and the highest mountain outside of Asia.

While sending off the climbers, Rajnath Singh emphasized that such expeditions test not only physical strength but also courage, patience, teamwork, and mental resilience. He praised the climbers for their qualities that bring honor to the nation and extended his best wishes to both institutes.

Notably, the expedition features six experienced climbers, including Colonel Hem Chandra Singh, Captain G. Santosh Kumar, Deep Bahadur Sahi, Vinod Gusain, Naib Subedar Bhupinder Singh, and Havildar Ramesh Kumar. According to the Ministry of Defense, the mission will commence on February 6 and is expected to conclude by the end of the month.

The Defense Minister stated that the experience gained from this expedition will enhance training for youth, military personnel, and those interested in adventure sports, showcasing India’s growing presence in significant mountaineering endeavors.

It is worth mentioning that a team of Indian climbers recently achieved a historic milestone by successfully summiting Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters). This team included soldiers from the Indian Army, trainers, and senior officials, representing a collaborative effort from the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling.

On May 23, 2025, this team established a record by reaching the summit of Mount Everest. The expedition was led by Colonel Anshuman Bhadauria, Principal of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, and Colonel Hem Chandra Singh, Principal of the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports.
