Gangtok, June 20: The Indian Army has successfully completed the modernization of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Hostel in the Lower Jongu area of northern Sikkim as part of ‘Operation Sadbhavana.’ This initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to social welfare and education. The hostel, located within the Taryang Primary School campus, provides residential facilities for children from remote Lepcha villages.
Established in 1976, Taryang Primary School has long catered to the educational needs of rural and tribal communities in the region. However, students faced numerous challenges due to difficult geographical conditions, harsh weather, limited connectivity, and a lack of basic amenities. The hostel, which accommodates around 35 students, previously lacked essential facilities, impacting the living and learning environment.
In response to these issues, the Indian Army devised a comprehensive development plan for the hostel. The upgrade included the installation of clean and modern toilets, improved sanitation facilities, enhancements to the kitchen and dining area, and strengthened electricity supply. Additionally, modern furniture has been provided, along with digital learning aids to enhance the educational experience.
To promote the overall development of the children, the Army has also expanded sports and recreational facilities. Security has been bolstered with chain fencing around the school premises, making the hostel a safer place for students.
An Army officer remarked that the relationship between the Army and the people of Sikkim has always been based on trust, respect, and a shared sense of development. He emphasized that this project aims to provide children in remote areas with a safe, healthy, and inspiring environment to nurture their talents and pave the way for a better future.
