Indian-American Tech Leader Soma Somasegar Honored in U.S. Congress

Washington, June 13: Indian-American technology executive and entrepreneur Shivaramakrishnan ‘Soma’ Somasegar has been honored in the U.S. House of Representatives for his significant contributions to technology, entrepreneurship, and community service. Somasegar has played a crucial role at Microsoft and later became a prominent venture capitalist in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene praised Somasegar as an exceptional technical expert, entrepreneur, leader, and friend during her speech in the House. She highlighted his extraordinary management skills, dedication, and hard work, which propelled him to the position of Senior Vice President at Microsoft until 2015.

“It was a pleasure to know him while working at Microsoft. His smile and friendly nature brought energy to any room he entered,” DelBene remarked. She noted that he guided countless startups and made significant contributions to strengthening the innovation ecosystem in the region.

DelBene also recognized Somasegar as a strong advocate for women’s empowerment, supporting organizations that promote opportunities and equality. A significant portion of her address was dedicated to Somasegar’s family, emphasizing that his wife Akila and their two daughters were the center of his world.

“He often spoke with great respect, gratitude, and pride about his family. His love for them was behind every achievement. Anyone who knew him also knew that his family inspired him, supported him, and shaped his character,” she added.

DelBene urged her fellow lawmakers to honor Somasegar’s legacy, stating that his family, friends, and colleagues would remember his kindness and wisdom for years to come.

Born and raised in South India, Somasegar moved to the United States in 1989 to study at Louisiana State University before joining Microsoft. He played a pivotal role in developing one of the company’s most significant products, Windows NT.

After leaving Microsoft, Somasegar joined Madrona Venture Group as Managing Director, where he collaborated with entrepreneurs and emerging companies in the tech sector.

Somasegar was also active in community activities and sports. As a co-founder of the Seattle Orcas franchise, he played a vital role in promoting professional cricket in the Pacific Northwest, enhancing the sport’s popularity in a region with a growing South Asian community.

Somasegar’s career reflects the increasing influence of Indian professionals in the American technology industry. Over the past few decades, Indian executives and engineers have significantly shaped Silicon Valley and the U.S. innovation economy.

His journey from South India to top leadership at Microsoft, venture capital investments, and professional cricket illustrates the growing presence of the Indian diaspora in the U.S. and its strengthening role in technology, business, and public life.
