Scott Morrison Praises Modis Focus on National Interests in Indias Foreign Policy

Canberra, August 13: Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison commended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for emphasizing strong national interests and a pragmatic approach in India’s foreign policy. He also recognized the significant role played by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, in advancing Modi’s vision.
In an interview with Italian-Indian entrepreneur and analyst Vas Shenoy, Morrison shared insights on the evolution of India’s foreign policy. This discussion coincided with New Delhi’s preparations to celebrate its 80th Independence Day on Saturday.
Morrison noted that India is now rapidly focusing on realizing opportunities while keeping its national interests in mind. He stated, “India respects its freedom and independent environment. It maintains close ties with countries like the USA, Australia, Japan, and Korea due to its interests. This is not done at the expense of other relationships. Prime Minister Modi is clear that he will reach out to whoever he needs to. He will visit any country deemed necessary to promote India’s national interests. Every leader does this—advancing national interests.”
He emphasized that Modi has placed a strong emphasis on national interests and practicality in India’s foreign policy. In this process, Dr. Jaishankar has been a capable ally, diligently advancing this leadership. There are vast possibilities ahead, whether in the economy, technology, or space. Morrison believes that in the next 20-30 years, as India’s space economy matures, the country will emerge as a space superpower.
Morrison stressed that India’s active participation remains central to the significance of the Quad. He identified New Delhi’s involvement as a crucial factor for the group’s success. He also mentioned the increasing focus on maritime security across the Indo-Pacific and the need to give more importance to ‘India’ in the Quad agenda.
He remarked that the security aspects of the group have received renewed attention under the U.S. government, with foreign ministers consistently increasing their engagement.
During the ‘Indo-Mediterranean Dialogues,’ Morrison told Shenoy, “Secretary of State Rubio and his deputy are quite aware of the Quad’s vital role. Their approach to maritime security is robust, and it extends beyond the Pacific to the entire Indo-Pacific region. I am a strong advocate for elevating ‘India’ in the Quad agenda.”
Recalling his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, he noted that they discussed ongoing developments in the Indo-Pacific region. When the Prime Minister visited, he had the opportunity to meet him, and they engaged in extensive discussions about the region. Modi remains very attentive to these issues. India’s involvement in the Quad makes it special.
