Colombo, August 13: Sri Lanka Cricket has officially announced the women’s team for the upcoming Asia Cup. Fast bowlers Mithali Ayodhya, Chathurika Vimukthi, and off-spin all-rounder Dewmi Vihanga are making a comeback to the squad.
The Women’s Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in the UAE from August 28 to September 13. Mithali, Chathurika, and Vihanga were not part of the recent T20 International series against Pakistan, which Sri Lanka won 2-1. These three players have replaced Nimasha Meepage, Malki Madara, and Rashmika Sewwandi in the team.
As defending champions, Sri Lanka will enter the tournament with a strong lineup. The team claimed the title in 2024. Experienced batting all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu will lead the 15-member Sri Lankan team, with Harshitha Samarawickrama appointed as vice-captain. Sri Lanka has been placed in Group B alongside Bangladesh, hosts UAE, and debutants Indonesia.
Sri Lanka will kick off their title defense against the UAE on August 29, followed by a match against Indonesia on September 2. The final group stage match will be against Bangladesh on September 6. All matches will be held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This year’s Women’s Asia Cup will feature all games in the T20 format. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, scheduled for September 10 and 11, with the final taking place on September 13.
In a stunning upset during the 2024 final, Sri Lanka secured their first Asia Cup title against the seven-time champions India in Dambulla, in front of their home crowd. This marks the 10th edition of the tournament, which is being held in the UAE for the first time.
