India-US Trade Deal: What Goods Will Become Cheaper?

Mumbai, February 3: A recent agreement between India and the United States to reduce reciprocal tariffs may lead to lower prices for a variety of goods in the country. This includes technology-related products as well as certain agricultural items.

Reports indicate that prices for laptops, mobile gadgets, and consumer electronics could decrease due to this deal. Additionally, processed foods, packaged goods, and home appliances may also become cheaper as a result of lower import costs.

Import duties on pulses, dairy products, and processed foods could be reduced, potentially alleviating some of the pressure from rising food inflation. However, official details regarding the full terms of the deal from the government are still awaited.

The India-US trade deal could reshape trade relations between the world’s two largest democracies. The textile and ready-made garment sectors in India may benefit from the reduction in tariffs.

The gems and jewelry sector, a significant export area for India, may also gain from this trade agreement. Furthermore, industrial and engineering goods like steel and chemicals could see improved market access. However, experts note that duties on products like steel, aluminum, and copper may still remain as high as 50%.

Analysts suggest that some automotive parts may continue to face high tariffs even after the new trade deal.

This trade agreement was reached following a phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. Under this agreement, the US has reduced tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, while India has also lowered trade barriers on American products.

Reports suggest that the agreement includes a commitment from India to reduce oil purchases from Russia while increasing imports from the US and possibly Venezuela.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his satisfaction on social media platform X, stating, “I was pleased to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. I am happy to know that tariffs on ‘Made in India’ products have been reduced to 18%. Thank you, President Trump, on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people, for this wonderful announcement.”
