Mumbai, June 20: On the occasion of the Narendra Modi government’s 12 years in power, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the much-anticipated India-United Kingdom (UK) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will come into effect on July 15.
Addressing a press conference, Minister Goyal stated that under Prime Minister Modi‘s leadership, India has transformed from a nation of potential to a self-reliant global power. He was joined by State Co-Media Chief Omprakash Chauhan and State Spokesperson Pankaj Modi.
Goyal highlighted that over the past 12 years, the world has faced significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. However, Prime Minister Modi has successfully turned each crisis into an economic opportunity.
He remarked, “Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has signed nine historic FTAs, granting access to markets in 38 developed countries.” This development opens new global markets for Indian products, increases employment opportunities, and creates new avenues for Indian entrepreneurs, farmers, fishermen, and women business owners.
Goyal further stated that the bilateral talks during Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to France and the upcoming India-UK FTA will yield significant positive outcomes for the Indian economy in the near future.
Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s global popularity, Goyal noted that 33 countries have honored him with their highest civilian awards, including several developed nations and countries with which India previously had limited diplomatic ties.
Discussing domestic initiatives, Goyal emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering benefits to the last person without discrimination, highlighting the crucial role of digital technology.
He mentioned several significant achievements in social security and infrastructure, stating, “Over 550 million bank accounts have been opened under the Jan Dhan scheme, with more than 320 million accounts in women’s names. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 810 million people have been provided with free rations. More than 600 million health cards have been issued under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring free treatment for those in need. Additionally, over 580 million people have been provided with insurance coverage under the Prime Minister’s Security Insurance Scheme.”
Goyal added that the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme has provided over 4 million permanent homes. The Ujjwala scheme has relieved 110 million women from smoke exposure, and the Swachh Bharat Mission has constructed over 12 million toilets, revolutionizing sanitation in the country.
In conclusion, the Minister stated that the goal of building a developed India by 2047 is a collective mission of 1.4 billion Indians and remains a guiding mission for the central government.
He also mentioned that internal security has been significantly strengthened, with decisive actions taken against terrorism and successful efforts to integrate youth from previously Maoist-affected areas into the mainstream.
