New Delhi, March 19: The Indian cricket team is set to play a T20 series against Ireland in June, prior to their white-ball tour of England. This announcement was confirmed by Cricket Ireland’s High-Performance Director, Graham West. Although this series is not part of the ICC Future Tours Program (FTP), it will serve as a warm-up for India ahead of their England tour.
Graham West also revealed that veteran batsman Paul Stirling has stepped down as the T20 captain. This decision comes after the team’s disappointing performance in the World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
“Paul has been an excellent leader, combining his playing experience with remarkable management skills,” West stated. He will continue to captain the ODI team, with the primary goal of successfully navigating the qualification round and leading the team in the ODI World Cup scheduled for October-November next year. Following the qualification for the T20 World Cup 2028, Stirling’s resignation as T20 captain will allow a new leader to implement their strategies, starting with the series against India in June.
With Stirling stepping down from the T20 captaincy, the Ireland men’s team will now have different captains for all three formats. Andrew Balbirnie will lead the Test side, while Paul Stirling will remain in charge of the ODI team. The announcement for the new T20 captain will be made later.
India last toured Ireland in August 2023, where they played a three-match T20 series at Malahide Cricket Ground. India won the first two matches, while the third match was abandoned due to rain.
