New Delhi, July 23: At just 15 years old, opening batsman Vaibhav Suryaanshi is drawing global attention. He is set to showcase his talent in a three-match T20 series against Zimbabwe starting Thursday in Harare. This series marks a significant step for the young player as he transitions from the Under-19 circuit to senior international cricket.
Suryaanshi previously made headlines by scoring an unbeaten 175 runs at the Harare Sports Club, leading India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup final. This is the same venue where Zimbabwe’s tall and fast bowlers, such as Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava, have thrived due to the pitch’s seam movement and bounce. These bowlers are expected to test Suryaanshi’s resolve with short-pitched deliveries, reminiscent of the challenges posed by Jofra Archer.
Former Indian spinner Maninder Singh believes that while opposing teams will scrutinize Suryaanshi’s weaknesses, his natural talent, strong work ethic, and supportive environment will enable him to adapt to the challenges ahead. He is optimistic that Suryaanshi will surpass the modest total of 42 runs he scored in his first three international matches in England.
In a special interview with the broadcaster ‘FanCode’, Maninder stated, “Yes, but it also depends on the conditions. Transitioning from playing with Under-19 players to senior players can reveal certain weaknesses, especially in conditions like England where there is some bounce. Teams today analyze a lot of video footage to identify weaknesses. This trend will continue, and now that he has started playing international cricket, people will wonder how this 15-year-old will score runs. Bowlers will likely put in extra effort to outsmart him.”
Maninder regards Suryaanshi as an extraordinary talent who will find ways to adapt to the conditions. He is confident that Suryaanshi will actively work on his challenges rather than shy away from them.
“He is very talented. He will find a way to adapt to these situations. I believe he will start working in this direction. The advantage for him is that coaches keep a close watch on him, and his father is also involved in his journey. This means his weaknesses will be identified, and work will begin on them. If parents start training their child in cricket at the age of 8, 9, or 10, and by 15, the child is playing for India, one thing is certain: the child is talented. Another point is that a lot of hard work has gone into their development. Lastly, I foresee that Vaibhav will actively start addressing his weaknesses while playing international cricket.”
