New Delhi, July 23: The first match of the three-match T20 International series between India and Zimbabwe is set to take place on Thursday, July 23. Abhishek Sharma has a golden opportunity to join the elite club of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul by scoring just 16 runs.
So far, Abhishek has amassed 5,984 runs in 199 innings of T20 cricket. If he scores 16 runs during this series against Zimbabwe, he will become the fourth Indian player to reach the 6,000-run milestone in the shortest format of the game. Only Kohli, Rahul, and Shubman Gill have achieved this feat before him.
KL Rahul holds the record for the fastest 6,000 runs in T20 cricket among Indian players, accomplishing this in just 166 innings. Kohli reached this landmark in 184 innings, while Gill took 185 innings to do so. If Abhishek manages to score 142 runs in this series, he will surpass Shikhar Dhawan to become the highest run-scorer for India in T20 Internationals. Currently, Abhishek has scored 1,618 runs in 53 T20 matches, while Dhawan has 1,759 runs in 68 matches.
Should Abhishek score 16 runs against Zimbabwe, he will also become the highest run-scorer in the India-Zimbabwe T20 series. He currently ranks second in this list with 179 runs from six matches, trailing only Zimbabwe’s captain Sikandar Raza, who has 194 runs from 11 matches. Abhishek has shown a strong affinity for Zimbabwe’s bowling attack and will aim to leave a lasting impression with his performance in this T20 series, especially after struggling in his last three T20 matches against England.
