India Strengthens Defense Ties with Sri Lanka, Delivers $5.5 Million Military Aid

Colombo, June 16: India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka has handed over military equipment to the Sri Lankan Army for deployment in United Nations (UN) missions. This aid is valued at $5.5 million.

High Commissioner Santosh Jha shared on the social media platform ‘X’, “This is another step towards strengthening India-Sri Lanka defense relations and enhancing operational capabilities. I am pleased that military supplies have been provided to the Sri Lankan Army for UN missions under this $5.5 million assistance.”

He added, “In response to Sri Lanka’s request, India promptly arranged these supplies. This demonstrates trust and confidence in the defense relations between our two countries.”

Earlier, in April, India provided the Sri Lanka Coast Guard with two Personal Watercraft (PWCs) and security equipment.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo reported on ‘X’ that India is assisting the Sri Lanka Coast Guard in enhancing its coastal search and rescue capabilities.

The equipment was handed over to the Operations Director during an event at the Sri Lanka Coast Guard headquarters in Mirissa by the Defense Advisor of the Indian High Commission.

As part of humanitarian assistance, India also delivered two BHISM (India Health Initiative for Cooperation, Interest, and Friendship) cubes to Sri Lanka on April 24 under its ‘Arogya Maitri’ initiative.

These modern portable medical units can handle up to 200 emergency cases. They include essential medicines and equipment necessary for general surgeries, allowing for immediate medical intervention when needed.

The medical units were delivered via the Indian Navy’s Diving Support and Submarine Rescue Ship INS Inspector, which arrived at Colombo Port on April 21 to participate in the fourth ‘India-Sri Lanka DiveEx-2026’ bilateral diving exercise.
