India, Somalia Discuss Expanding Multilateral Cooperation

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali on Friday to discuss enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Sharing a photo of the meeting on social media platform X, Jaishankar wrote, “It was good to meet Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali. We had a productive discussion on advancing our trade, capacity building, education, health, consular, and multilateral cooperation.”

The meeting took place in New Delhi, where both leaders held detailed talks to strengthen bilateral relations. According to officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, this engagement is part of India’s growing outreach in the Horn of Africa region, reflecting its active diplomacy in Africa.

Foreign Minister Abdisalam is on an official visit to India, meeting Indian officials to discuss various bilateral and multilateral issues.

Earlier, Jaishankar also met with Libya’s Foreign Minister, Eltaher S M Elbawer, as part of the India-Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting (IAFMM) held in the national capital. Several foreign ministers arrived in New Delhi on Friday for the meeting, engaging in separate discussions with Minister Jaishankar.

Posting photos of his meeting with Elbawer on X, Jaishankar said, “It was good to meet Libya’s Foreign Minister Eltaher S M Elbawer this afternoon. We had a fruitful discussion on expanding cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and energy. Thank you for the briefing on Libya’s situation. We emphasised India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy for maintaining peace and stability in the region.”

Both the Foreign Ministers of Somalia and Libya arrived in New Delhi on Friday. Welcoming the Libyan minister, the Ministry of External Affairs stated on social media, “Their participation in the India-Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting and the events in New Delhi will positively boost our bilateral relations.”
